About the Library

        The total area of the library is 27,000 m² with the new building of 14,000 m², old building of 4,492 m² and secondary schools’ reference rooms of 559.2 m². There are 3,219 seats in the library for reading. The library has the arched glass roof and its main body has five storeys. Its internal side is open and separated by glass. Two observation elevators can carry the readers directly to the top. The library is a perfect place to study with its elegant surroundings and atmosphere. There are 8 reading rooms in the library. It adopts the open management pattern by combining keeping with lending, reading, managing and searching. The complete facility of the library provides the readers with comfortable and quiet studying surroundings. The organization of the library is perfect and its multiple functions include consultation, borrowing books, reading periodicals, information search, readers’ training, inter-library loan, literature transmission, literature printing, copying and other services of different types and levels.

Our aim is to build the first-class modern library, which has featured resources, all-direction service and advanced management to meet the demand of the university.

 

        Dalian Polytechnic University is a multiple-discipline university with feature of light industry, textile and art and combining engineering with science, art, management and economics. As the literature information center of the university, the library constructs its resources construction according to the university’s character, speciality setting and developing trend. At present, the library has formed the literature keeping system of multiple types, languages and carriers with priority given to science and engineering and giving priority to social science, management and other subjects.

 

        The library began to use the computer management system in 1990 and upgraded to Bo-Fei-Te Integrated Literature Management System. It also introduced the advanced library management system software --- Huiwen Literature Information Services System, which has the function of standardized and network service and the automated integrated management with the network of many services like library resources searching and viewing, dividing, ancient books collecting, periodical management, information searching and developing and administration. The library has modern electronic literature reading room, online search room and multiple-function video room.

The library has connected local area network with campus area network and smoothly linked the information system with campus area network, which provides the network circumstance for the services of the library. As the main joint of campus area network, the library has a quadrillion central exchanging machine and eighteen exchanging machines of access layer to support over 731 information points. It also has thirteen PC servers and a set of fiber storing equipment to realize the local mirroring browsing of various data and provide the readers with various information services like searching, browsing and downloading. What’s more, every reading room is equipped with a consulting computer to provide the readers with books consulting, readers’ information (OPAC) and the library guidance information service.

 

        Professional websites are collected together to help the teachers acquaint themselves with the related information of their own majors. At present the websites include food science and engineering, textile engineering, fashion design and engineering, chemistry and pulping and paper making engineering.

 

        After entering WTO, the food safety problem of our country faced more severe challenge and some  advantageous agricultural products were frustrated. Some experts and scholars of the Ministry of Agriculture, Chinese Agriculture Science and Chinese Standard Research Center edited the Electronic Library Database of Foreign Food Quality Safety Management System, which will help establish sound food safety and guarantee system, improve the agricultural trade value of our country and deal with the government affairs by using electronic resources effectively.

 

        Dissertations and theses are important literature resources to reflect the academic characteristics and levels of the university. They also represent the level and direction of the teaching and research work and talents training in higher education. Our university has collected our graduates’ dissertations and established the digital dissertations database.

 

        In order to speed up the construction of our digital library, our library prepared and built the teachers and students’ publication database of our university to collect their publications and the corresponding electronic literature database.

 

        The library has built its own video database to provide the readers with convenient and all-direction VOD order program service, which allow the readers to appreciate the clear and good DVD programs in the electronic reading room.
